I am told I need to install various drivers once I upgrade to Vista
from XP on my Dell Dimension desktop. If I do a clean install rather
than an upgrade, do I still need to install drivers? Thanks

Yes. You can obtain Windows Vista drivers
from Dell Support.

You can device driver updates from both Dell and the device driver
developers for the components in your PC such as Video Card, my sound
drivers for my Dell Dimesion 8300 came down through Windows Update by the
way, and my modem driver was installed automatically by Vista. So make sure
you check those locations after upgrading to Vista. You should also run the
Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor before upgrading to get a good overview of
what might need upgrading after Vista has been installed or what you need to
upgrade before installing it:

Yes.
Download them before you start and put them on a usb key or a cd or similar
so you have them to hand.
Check to see if any of the drivers are for your hard disk controller as they
may need special treatment if they need to be installed while vista is
installing.
The readme from dell is a good place to start.

Certainly. Before starting, you need to check with Dell to ensure that
Vista-specific drivers are available for your specific model computer,
and it'd be an awfully good idea to have those drivers downloaded and
burnt to a CD.

Yes.

Clean install highly recommended over upgrade. (Personal opinion...)

Usually the only drivers you need to -install- Vista are storage type
drivers. Vista should install fine if you don't have, say, video drivers. It
would default to VGA or whatever the default driver is (sorry, dunno...).
Then you could update the video driver -after- doing the Vista install.

Key point here is: ensure that there ARE Vista drivers for -all- your
hardware -prior- to doing the clean install or upgrade. You might even want
to "root around" in this ng and others to see if Vista drivers for your HW
are "known good." Or... you could just dive into the deep end... your
choice.

In any case... good luck.

This is what the Upgrade Advisor program should tell you about.

I don't know that I'd take the Upgrade Advisor's recommendations as gospel.
Well, I know -I- wouldn't. Whether others do is their business.
