I have Vista Business on a Dell Vostro 1700 with 4Gb ram.

For a while I had problems with Windows Explorer freezing. That now seems
to happen only now and again, except for USB access. That has now been
giving trouble over the last week or so.

If I plug in a USB flash disk, it shows the busy cursor for about 4 or 5
minutes and then displays. If you the try to do anything like copy files,
you get the samer all over again. If I connect a USB Lacie 160Gb drive it
just freezes. Occasionally however it does what it is supposed to straight
away.

I never got these problems before with a Dell Inspiron 8600 on Vista
Enterprise. I have run all the diagnostics, both in the Dell utilities and
Memory diagnostics in Windows, plus every other check I can think of.

Windows Explorer works fine on everything except USB. At the same time that
this started to happen I also started to have trouble connecting to the
Internet wirelessly using a Huawei E220 HSDPA Modem. It connects but then
drops out even when what I would consider reasonably good signal (HSDPA, 3G)
exists. Instead of dropping down to a lower speed as required as it did
before, now it just drops the connection.

I think this is an issue of Windows handling of USB as it is common to more
than 1 device.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Have you contacted Dell Support this issue?

I have never had any problems with Vista and USB.

Do you have the latest BIOS version? What about chipset driver updates?

To confirm that your hardware is ok, try booting up with something like
BartPE and see if your can access your USB drive normally from there.
