Vista - web page problems

A friend of mine has recently (one week ago) purchased a HP Pavilion dv5
laptop with Vista.

She is now connected to the internet and she asked me to help with a few
matters. I set IE to Google Search as the home page, as I noted that the
default home page was very slow in loading, being very media intensive.

However, I notice that the new home page it still takes some 4 - 5 secs to
fully display correctly. As you helpers would know, the Google Search page
is very simple and should open in a "snap". I tested her broadband speed
against a test site here in Australia and her speed is 1.2 Mbps (1204kbps)
which compares favourably with her ISP's line speed of 1.5Mbps.

The second problem is, that when trying to open a HTTPS site the computer
refuses to load the web page! I tried a number of HTTPS websites that I have
used, same result every time.

The antivirus program being used is Norton 360 (?) and using only the
Windows firewall.

Can someone give me an idea of how to solve these problems? Thanks.

Reset Internet Explorer back to the defaults. Then remove Norton from your
machine. Install AVAST antivirus. AVAST is free for home users.

Hi,

Uninstall the Norton360, does the situation improve? Not to be cynical, but
I've encountered this before. Some are lucky to connect at all when using
it.

Hi Rick,

I don't think you are being cynical - I was suspicious of Norton. I also
just needed to know if there were any other any other issues that may well
produce the same result.

measekite also was suspicious of Norton.

Will do what you have advised. Thanks.

You might also need to use this.
A virus is easier to remove than Norton is.

Thanks Rick, Mick and measekite.

Used Symantec's removal tool to dump Norton 360 and the computer now runs
like it should - properly!
