Downloaded and installed the newest itunes and synced new iphone3GS on my PC
running Vista and Windows mail. Was able to receive and send mail on the
iphone but not send mail on my computer after the sycn. Have deleted the
e-mail account from my iphone, and deleted and reimported .ini file on PC in
Windows Mail. Still not receiving mail on Vista PC but I can send. All
account settings seem to be the same as before. Am able to send and receive
mail on old PC running XP Home and Outlook Expess.

An Apple device(iPhone or iPod touch does not sync with Windows or Windows Vista)

Deleting the account from the iPhone does not impact the settings in Vistas Windows Mail.

To setup the same account in Windows Mail that resides in Outlook Express, export the account in OE to an *.iaf file, then import
the *.iaf file into Windows Mail.

If using pop3 protocol on the iPhone or iPod Touch consider configuring one or the other device(Apple's or Windows Mail) to leave
mail on the server to ensure that mail is available on both devices...not doing so will most likely cause mail on one device and
not the other(I.e. see comment above about no sync).

oops, meant to say .iaf file. Used the same one exported from OE and
imported into WinMail. I deleted the mail account from my Iphone hoping it
would somehow undo the issue but no luck. any other suggestions welcome.
Thanks

iTunes and the iPhone/iPod Touch do not sync with Windows Vista or Windows Mail or Windows Vista Contacts or Windows Vista Calendar
or Windows Live Mail Contacts or Windows Live Mail Calendar.

iTunes does sync an iPhone or iPod touch with the Outlook's Contacts and Calendar.

Setup the account separately on each application(iPhone and Vista Windows Mail)
The only option you have for a Hotmail account on Vista's Windows Mail is pop3.

Configuration settings for Hotmail pop3 can be found here

mbox mail, for the iphone, can sync contacts with hotmail.com, if necessary.
otherwise you can use pop3 access, if you like

Thanks Catherine..
I forgot about mbox Mail applet for the iPhone/Touch. It is a nice application.

Last I recall, and please update if necessary.
- the mbox Mail for Hotmail/Windows Live Mail originally had some limitations(redirect mail larger than 1MB to the web interface,
and doesn't sync attached images from Photos and save in Drafts with WLHotmail) that supposedly were update in version 2.01 or
later
- fee based ~$10 (U.S.)
- push delivery(may or may not be supported ?

Is it STILL the case that there is no way to sync windows live mail
Contacts/Calendar to iPhone? Sorry to ask a question that has already been
addressed here... but I was hoping for some updates somehow.

No change at this time.
To do so, both Msft and Apple need to address the issue.

Suggest you start with Apple. They would need access to Msft code and also make it present on the iPhone to physically accomplish
the task.

Until then, export your Live contacts to a csv file and import into Outlook, then sync with the iPhone/iPod Touch or consider the
mBox iTunes applet option discussed earlier.

.... or by a mac

I could do the contacts export but the calendar, which changes daily, I
guess is another matter. I dont know if I could use Windows Live Mail
(Desktop) for mail and keep the calendar on Outlook or not... but that just
seems so sloppy.

So close to PDA bliss but yet... so far.

It actually is tempting to try a Mac and see if all this stuff works better.
On the other hand, if Outlook would allow me to manage IMAP mail while
offline- it would be perfect.... but alas--- it doesnt.

I doubt the Mac will provide any additional improvement relative to Hotmail(the real location of your contacts)since the root issue
is two separate companies each with their own proprietary requirements.

Hotmail requires DeltaSync support to access mail, contacts, calendar..support for that http protocol is only available in:
- WLM and Outlook03/07(the latter with the Outlook Connector)

I.e. the pc at this time is not the issue..Mbox(for a fee) apparently overcomes this to some extent.
