VISTA Windows Update does not work

I have just reinstalled Vista after having some problems. After many attemps
at updating to SP1, I manually installed the stand alone 5 language version
prior to any other updates. All went well. Now, when I go to Start: Windows
Update, A window opens, but nothiing happens. The window stays blank and the
cursor in the window twirls forever. I have tried turning off the firewall
with no success. Problem is on a Compaq laptop.

I would not recommend installing SP1 manually until and unless it's offered
by Windows Update.
