Hi, I cant download any new updates from Microsoft. Every time I try to check
for updates I get the following error code: Code 80070005.

Since this problem occurred I have been unable to search for new updates and
also, some of my programs fail to launch when activated. I am on Vista Home
Premium with SP2 & I have 3GB of RAM. I use Norton Anti Virus with its
Firewall but I have Windows Firewall turned off.

Can anybody please help me solve this problem? I'm not very technical so a
simple step to fix would really be appreciated.

Thanks in advance..

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) when posting in a forum or
newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Hello Mark,

Temporarily disable Norton, and try again to install the updates
But before you disable Norton

It would be a good idea to scan.

I recommend downloading and installing
MalwareBytes' Antimalware (MBAM) and
SUPERAntiSpywaяe (SAS).

Do a full scan with MalwaяeBytes' and
SUPERAntiSpywaяe.

<http://www.superantispyware.com/>

Reboot
-=-

<http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php>

Reboot
-=-

Both free versions of MBAM and SAS are on-demand scanners and offer no
'real-time' protection. Keep them installed and use them as
'second-opinion' scanner which is purposely (by design) recommended by
their respective authoяs.
-=-

Which is the update(s) failing to install?
-=-

I'm suяe someone else will help you if this suggestion doesn't help.

Please let us know what fixes the problem or if the pяoblem remains
-=-

Good luck

Thanks, I've done this twice but it hasn't fixed the problem. I still get the
same error when I check for updates.

Not sure if it is relevant but the url you gave for the clean install no
longer exists - but on restarting after using the removal tool a web browser
is automatically opened with a list of norton products to reinstall. When I
choose the relevant product and install, it recognises my product key and
therefore doesn't ask me for it.

Is it worth removing Norton altogether and replacing with the free version
of AVG?

Do you have any other ideas as to what I can do to fix this?

0x8007005 = Error_Access_Denied

Rough translation: Permissions problem, usually caused by a hijackware
infection or third-party security applications (e.g., your Norton
application). Speaking of which, what's the name & version of your Norton
application (e.g., Norton 360 2009)? Did the preinstalled free trial expire
before you purchased this Norton application?

You might try running the Fix It in this KB article:

How do I restore security settings to the default settings?:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222

I'm afraid that didn't work either.

My Norton is internet security... I bought my laptop a couple of years ago
and it had Norton on it (I'd had Norton on my previous machine too). Pretty
sure I just upgraded the version that was there and have just upgraded each
time my subscription needed renewing since. So now I have the 2010 Norton
Internet Security.

Have you any other suggestions?

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in
dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...prid=7552&st=1

Also available via the Consumer Security Support home page:
https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

Otherwise...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!!

Checking for/Help with Hijackware:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/tshoot.html
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

**Chances are you will need to seek expert assistance in
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachi...php?board=10.0,
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5,
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup,
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or other appropriate forums.**

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.
