If you are being continually bothered by Windows Update saying that an
updated driver for XYZ is available and the installation keeps on
failing with an error code 0x80070103, you are running a version of the
XYZ driver that Windows Update is not expecting.
When Windows Update finds an existing driver for which it is no longer
clear that the version being downloaded is in fact the more recent one,
it prevents the installation from continuing.
This is almost always because you have installed a manufacturer's or a
third-party driver that has yet to be registered with the Windows
Update driver version database (usually because it was just released,
in my experience)
Anyway, to correct this and to make Windwos Update stop bothering you
about the "later version being available" your best bet is to first
uninstall the XYZ driver you are currently running, and then let
Windows Update download and install (what it thinks is) the latest XYZ
driver.
Afterwards, if you're unsatisfied with the version of the driver
provided by Windows Update, you can then go to the manufacturer's
website and/or use your installation disk to install the "real" latest
version of the driver over it.
Windows Update should thereafter stop bothering you about having the
"latest version" as the new version is now registered with their
database.
