Have new HP computer with Vista O S.When I try to preform Windows Update I
get error message "Windows could not search for new updates- error Code
800B0100"
Similiar problem with Windows Defender definitions update. All other
programs working well. I have had this computer for three months and I
believe this problem was there from the original startup. Extensive
discussions with HP and Microsoft who have given up and are recommending I
preform a "system recovery"
which of course I am reluctant to do!

Before someone recommends steps to try, just what did HP/MS have you
attempt ?

0x800B0100 - No signature was present in the subject

Was an antivirus/security suite software preinstalled by HP ?
If so, which one, please ?

Windows Defender (antispyware) factory installed. Also Norton Antivirus was
also factory installed but was removed and was replaced with AVG antivirus.

The issue *most* likely stems from the previous installation of Norton.
0x800B0100 - No signature was present in the subject

See if you can run " Startup Repair ":

The Norton Anti-virus program was removed from my computer. I have a Windows
Vista System Recovery Disk - can I use this disk to make a Startup Repair as
indicated in this link? And will this correct my Windows Update problems -Do
not understand meaning of "no signature was present on this subject"

I do not know how HP deals with System Repair. Not sure what the
" Windows Vista System Recovery Disk " will do.
Advise you to heed the above advice before preceding.
Having NAV preinstalled and/or removing it may be the culprit with the
updating issue from the get go.

It appears that the system can not recoginize the validity of the
update's digital signature. That's what I take away from it.
Just for the heck of it, let's give this a shot:

1. Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then click Command
Prompt under Programs.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password, or click Allow.

Note If you do not have administrator rights and permissions, start the
Command Prompt program by right-clicking Command Prompt, clicking Run as
administrator, and then typing administrator credentials.
2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty

If the command prompt stays open, type in

exit
Press Enter
Restart the system and see if it can update

I am having the identical problem to Richard, except my computer came from
Dell. I had Nortons .. removed it the day I got the computer and installed
AVG also. Now getting this same obnoxious error when trying to Update
(800B0100). I have tried all the things you mentioned above now too. When I
try to delete the reg key you mention it says not found. Not sure if that
makes it the problem or not. This is a seriously frustrating problem.

The fix posted came from this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/KB931712

It was a reach to think it would resolve the updating issue with
Richard's system.
To be blunt, there's something seriously amiss with Vista's ability to
update 'out of the box'. The amount of Vista updating issues in this
newsgroup are troubling, to put it mildly.
And, the documentation MS offers for said updating issues with Vista are
slim to almost none.

Vista is not installed on any of my systems due to way too many bugs.
Which kind of limits what I can offer anyone for advice on resolving
it's update issues.

The standard MS blurb to resolve update issues in Vista at this point in
time is to delete the SoftwareDistribution folder.

With all that being said ... I'm going to bite the bullet and install
Vista to a spare HD some time this week. Maybe then I can find out why
these weird updating issues are occurring in clean installations.
But, since it's not an OEM version like Dell's or HP's, and no way in
hell will I install any Symantec crud on it, it may not be much help.

Stay tuned, Casey. I'll post anything I come up with here:

A search on my hard drive indicates no StartUp Repair program- I will check
HP to see if they have any preinstalled recovery tools
