Vista won't boot after windows update..help !

I downloaded and installed 2 optional updates for my ati x1900 on the update
page and now my pc won't boot at all. Tried safe mode and F8, last known good
config but it will not start. Safe mode gets up to
system32/drivers/crcdsk.sys and then freezes. No way I can even get to system
restore....please help

Reading other similar posts it seems it was a microsoft "recommended" update
that caused the problem.
Others seem to have solved it by using their recovery disk and repairing but
how do I access my disk if vista doesn't boot ?

During boot you can get to the startup menu by pressing F8, then choose
"Last known good configuration"

This should roll you back to the point before you installed the update.

If this doesn't work, and you have an actual Vista DVD, place the DVD in
your tray and boot from the DVD, then choose the repair option in the menu
that comes up after you choose the language.

If you don't have a Vista DVD and only have a "recovery" disk provided by
your OEM, you can try starting is safe mode (again, simply press F8 during
boot and choose Safe Mode) and from there run System Restore and choose a
restore point that's earlier than the date you installed the update.

Word of advice, ignore ALL hardware driver updates offered by Windows
Update. They more often than not break things . . . plus it seems this ATi
update has been showing up even for systems that have no ATi hardware
installed.

Thanks for the reply but I can't get the recovery disk to work because
windows won't boot even in safe mode( after hitting F8 or any other way) so I
can't get to system restore

Steve,

You can go into your BIOS settings (Press F2 or DEL key) when your
computer starts up and make sure it set to boot from the CD/DVD first.
When the computer restarts, press a key to boot from the DVD. This
should work regardless if Vista or Safe Mode will work. See the
instructions in this tutorial for how to run a Startup Repair.

Thanks brink. Got the disk booting up now. Seems to be reinstalling vista
from scratch. Thanks again.....stupid bloody microsoft updates !

I am having the same problem however after i changed bios to make th
DVD the first boot drive it still won't fix the problem. I even change
it to make all the boot sequences the DVD drive but still won't boot
What can I do

The above line probably should be C:\Windows\WinSxS

note backlashes!

I carried out this operation the other day without Vista CD but with a boot
disk called UBCD downloaded from the web.

Either get a bootable CD/DVD disk or replace your drive. You can also try
unplugging and then reseating the connector cables that go to the CD/DVD
drive. Sometimes it works.

The fact that your disk will not boot has nothing to do with Windows.
