Vista won't boot to normal

OK, here is the problem I am having:

I restarted my computer today. When Vista rebooted, it got past the loading
screen and then displayed a black screen with the mouse cursor. I can move
the cursor, but it never gets to the Welcome screen.

I can boot to Safe Mode just fine, but no matter what I do, I cannot get
Vista to boot in normal mode. Here is what I have attempted:

Uninstalled all Windows Updates since last reboot.
Uninstalled McAfee, whose updates prompted me to restart today.
Disabled all non-Microsoft services and startup programs.
Ran hardware diagnostics.
Tried Startup Repair from the troubleshooting startup menu.

I cannot access System Restore. When I attempt to restore to a save point, I
am told that no save point exists even though I know System Restore was
running. I am at my wit's end and Dell is telling me I will have to do a
clean install. Before I spend the time on that, though, I was hoping someone
would have some suggestions or resolutions. Any idea what is wrong and what
needs to be done to fix this?

what did ya do before you restarted, im always scared of screwing up my
computer, so when I paranoid (scared or something), I restart.
Anyway, as far as I know, was the last thing you did was install a update or
something. I've hear that some ppl computer don’t work after installing a
update.

The reason I rebooted the computer was because McAfee had installed some
software updates and required a reboot to complete the installation. However,
the updates from McAfee nor the Windows updates appears to have caused my
problem, as I have uninstalled both with no result. Nothing else, to my
knowledge, changed. I have checked the Event Viewer and there are no tell
tale signs except for errors with System Restore, which explain why that is
not working, but not why Vista won't load in the normal environment.

If you have a CD put it in and run Startup Repair.

No error messages? Does seem like a re-install is n your future....
you can do it OVER your existing install or wipe out and start
over. You can probably back up some critical data in Safe Mode.
