hello, running Vista Ultimate. Tonite, i installed a vista security
update(big problem) . It installed fine, but when computer restarted, an
error came up, instead if vista booting. Now i'm just staring at this
error
File: Netio.sys
Status: 0xC0000001
Info; Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or
corrupt.

I booted into XP (dual boot) and found 5 or 6 instances of this file, all
same size.

Now, Vista will not boot. Can anyone help?
I did the insert disk, click repair computer, but nothing changed.

Please Help

Dan C

Hello,

I am experiencing a very similar issue. After installing the Jan 2008
updates, the following error is shown each time the system is booted:

---
Windows Boot Manager

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the
cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer
manufacturer for assistance.

File: \Windows\system32\drivers\intelide.sys

Status: 0xc0000001

Info: Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing,
or corrupt.
---

I have followed these instructions, but that didn't help. Running "Repair
your computer" more than 20 times didn't help. I also tried to go back to
previous restore points. That process sometimes succeeded and sometimes
failed, but never helped to fix the issue. After rebooting, the error message
a few times mentioned other corrupt or missing files instead of
"intelide.sys". I believe I remember something mentioning atapi once and the
registry another time. But now it's back to the original error.

I've located "intelide.sys" (it's present at the appropriate location) and
replaced it with the same version from somewhere else as well as with a
different version. Nothing helped. It's back to the original now.

I've also tried the "System File Checker" (sfc.exe) off the Vista disc. But
it didn't find any issues with "intelide.sys" or any other files.

I also used "Bootrec.exe", but that didn't help either.

The system is a Dell Inspiron 510m with Windows Vista Business N (english).
The harddrive is pretty new (~6 months) and seems to be fine. I can access it
from both the command line of the Vista disc as well as from a Debian
instance off a USB drive. Both read and write access works.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm not in the mood to do a new
Windows installation, just because I installed the latest security updates.
Guess it's time to dump Vista and finally switch to Ubuntu for good...
