Hi there,
I'm running ultimate 64 on an asus m2n32sli deluxe m/b with 4gig ram
2xnvidia 7900gt's in sli mode under 162.22 drivers dual boot withxp (on
seperate drive).
Vista is giving me heaps of bsod's, usually when i'm away from comp but
not always.
The two latest, I managed to get the following info from, I am hoping
one of you fine guru's can shine some light on the problems.

STOP: ox00000024 (0x00000000001904AB, 0xFFFFF980106946CB,
0XFFFFF980106940A0, 0XFFFFF8000208FF7F )

and

STOP: 0X00000024 ( 0X00000000001904AB, 0XFFFFF98000C813C8,
0XFFFFF98000C80DA0, 0XFFFFF98000847C7D)
ntfs.sys - address FFFFF98000847C7D
BASE AT FFFFF98000836000
DATESTAMP 4549b40c

I have had many others concerning service exeption, driver or irq not
less than...., etc

I have tried memory diagnostics, chkdsk and SFC, all report no errors.

anyone got any ideas please?

many thanks for your time reading this.
all the best to you all,

Nightlight

Hi nightlight--

Generically this error message indicates damage to the NTFS file system.

Here's what I'd do to fix it:

***Startup Repair from the Vista DVD***

How to Use The Vista DVD to Repair Vista (Startup Repair is misnamed by the
Win RE team and it can be used to fix many Vista components even when you
can boot to Vista):

http://www.windowsvista.windowsreins...rtup/index.htm

If you elect to run Startup repair from the Vista DVD (it can fix major
components in Vista--I've verified this many many times; it's good for more
than startup problems, and the Win RE team simply screwed up when they named
it not understanding its full functionality):

Startup Repair will look like this when you put in the Vista DVD:

http://www.vistaclues.com/wp-content...r-computer.png

You run the startup repair tool this way (and system restore from here is
also sometimes effective):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925810/en-us

How To Run Startup Repair In Vista Ultimate (Multiple Screenshots)
http://www.windowsvista.windowsreins...rtup/index.htm

It will automatically take you to this on your screen:

http://www.vistaclues.com/wp-content...r-computer.png

That will allow you to go to the Vista setup that has a Repair link on
thelower left corner>click it and then you'll see a gray backgrounded list
and I want you to click Startup Repair from it and follow the directions.

The gray screen after you click the first link in the above pic will look
like this:

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winv...ir/Image17.gif

Click Startup Repair, the link at the top and after it scans>click OK and
let it try to repair Vista. It will tell you if it does, and if it
doesn't, try System Restore from the Recovery Link on the DVD. If these
don't work booting into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key and using System
Restore from one of the safe modes besides VGA may work. That means you
have the option to try 4 different safe modes to get to system restore, (one
from the Recovery link on the DVD) and sometimes one will work when the
others won't.

or...

I'd try a repair install with your Vista DVD. You do it the same way as
in XP:

***Repair Install Steps*** (can be used for Vista) MVP Doug Knox
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...ps/doug92.mspx

Additionally you could use the F8 environment fully:

***Using the F8 Environment***

***Taking Full Advantage of the F8 Options (Windows Advanced Options Menu)
by starting the PC and tapping F8 once per second when the firmware screen
with the pc manufacturer's name shows a few seconds after restarting***:

The F8 options in Vista are the same as XP, and the link for Safe Mode Boot
options is labled XP by MSFT but they are the same for Vista (they haven't
updated to add Vista to the title as they have with several MSKBs that apply
to both).

Again, pressing F8 repeatedly when you seem the firmware screen may be is a
generic way to launch Windows RE on some OEM Vista computers.

You could also:

Think: I have 4 different ways to get back my XP at F8 and try 'em in order.
1) Safe Mode 2) Safe Mode with Cmd to Sys Restore which is simply a cmd
prompt in safe mode 3) Safe Mode with Neworking 4) LKG or Last Known Good
Configuration

Try to F8 to the Windows Adv Options Menu>try 3 safe modes there (I don't
use WGA) and Last Known Good>then I go to Win RE in Vista. That gives you a
choice of Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, and Safe Mode with Command
Prompt.

These methods are outlined in

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP/and Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding System Restore from MSFT:

Good luck,

CH

i've had a couple of ntfs.sys bsod time ago

without analize a core dump its not accurate in any way, but in my machine
the culprit was nod32
try deactivating any antivirus/antispyware you have for a couple of weeks
and see what happens

of course im not advising about not having antivirus, it is just a easy test
to check if it is trashing your system
take in count that it is my personal experience on my hardware, it may not
apply to your system

That's the one MB I have that I have not tried Vista 64 on but my guess
would be the combination of things. I tried 2 7950 cards in SLI and they
were problematic in XP and a complete F* disaster with Vista. Of course
the NVidia driver situation did not help. Also that MB consumes quite a
bit of power and so do two of those cards so I have to ask if your case
/ power supply is adequately rated.

I am wondering if the "First" BSOD might have been caused by power
problems or Video drivers and thus damaged the drive or the data on it.

I am a little concerned that the other replies might get the diagnosis
of the present BSOD(s) right but miss an underlying hardware problem
that's actually the root cause. Rough guess I'd say you need 650W
absolute minimum, PSU, 750W if possible and maybe ever 1000W (Seriously)
for ultimate stability. And keep the fans and heatsinks clean.

Many thanks to you both for replying..

I will try the anti-virus idea and see if it works, as regards the
integrity of my hard drive, I got the ntfs.sys bsod again last night, I
immediately rebooted and had vista run chkdsk it reported NO
problems..groan!!

This morning I had another BSOD "page error in non-paged memory
" or something like that (i had just woken up n didnt have me glasses
on..lol).

I am sure Vista is just using me to check if ALL its bsod's are working
ok.hahahah ( I have to laugh or I'd cry heheeh )

Oh, another thing, i'm dual booting with XP pro (which runs like a
dream) but every time I do, my vista64 restore points are erased. As I
have both os's on different drives I disabled the vista drive in xp
(read it somewhere) but lo and behold the vista restore points still
vanish!! oh well

I plod on..mibbi I'll reformat n reinstall 32 bit vista...

again, thanks for the replies ,

Night...
