Vista x64 installation won't display my HDD

I am trying to install vista64 onto a new build, but when the time comes
to choose where I want to install Windows, my HDD (WD Caviar Black
640GB) does not show up. The HDD is recognized in the BIOS, so it
doesn't seem to be a connection issue. My motherboard is a Gigabyte
GA-EX58-UD4P, which only has drivers available for RAID or AHCI
installation. It seems, then, that installing Vista onto a single
non-RAID or AHCI hard drive does not require a specific driver. I have
tried installing with SATA Port0-3 Native Mode both enabled and
disabled, with the HDD in assorted SATA ports, and installing the
assorted RAID/AHCI drivers anyway. Nothing has worked.

The solution everywhere I look to address this question is to simply
install the SATA driver, however, there is no driver for a non AHCI or
RAID HDD on either the motherboard CD or website.

On a side note, I did try to change the HDD to AHCI in the BIOS, but
then my HDD was not detected by the BIOS at all. I don't really
understand what AHCI is (I get RAID), but since the BIOS can't detect
the HDD in AHCI, I can't check whether or not Windows will recognize the
HDD with the AHCI driver installed.

Any wisdom on this would be GREATLY appreciated.

Formatted the hard drive first, I'm now on Vista update 39 of 53.
