After updates were done at shutdown today, and I restarted my PC, I was
offered -
Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB978601)
Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB979309).

Upon manually initiating the updates, they failed and clicking on the error
message was a waste of time. I can see that the KB978601 update has already
been installed during the earlier shutdown. Is that the reason for the
problem? Should I tell WU to install the KB979309 update?

Yes, GrandpaG, allow KB979309 to install after KB987601 has previously
installed. Both of these updates need to be installed to mitigate the
Critical vulnerability shown here:

Vulnerabilities in Windows Could Allow Remote Code Execution (981210)

If you need *any* assistance for getting them to install properly or for
any issue that may arise after they have been installed, Microsoft
offers *** no-charge *** support.
