Hi have two computers (one running XP and the other Vista on a network
through whatever router they gave me when I ordered my internet service. I am
trying to add a printer that is connected to the Vista computer to the XP
computer through the network. I have set the printer to share - but cannot
find it on the XP computer... HELP!

I am not 100% sure this will help and I am also not sure whether I have the
same situation but I have somewhat the same setup I believe except the
computers are not networked but all use the same printer that is connected
to my router...I have 2 xp boxes and 1 vista box...what I did was going
through my xp computer I found the ip address of the printer and then went
to my vista box and went through "add a printer"and typed in the address
and it then found the printer and boom I could share it...Feel free to
ignore this if this does not help.....This message will self destruct in 5
seconds............Just my 3 cents........

that could be firewall related

the machine that shares the printer must be accepting connections coming
from the other pc (like a server), and only from your local network area,
or you will be sharing your printer to everybody on the internet.

set your firewall carefully.

good luck

It is much easier to hook the printer up to the XP and then share it. The
Vista will find it by just installing a network printer. If you connect the
printer to the Vista machine you have to go through the sharing wizard, do
fourteen backflips and say 2 Hall Mary's and set up sharing to everybody
which is a pain in the A--. So much for all the security setting on Vista
that just stop the user from working. I still have not figured out a way to
share my C:\ folder yet. To make your life easy just connect the printer to
the XP and share it from there.

Is the Network Printer added and configured first? You have to open the
Printer explorer > click Add Printer > and follow the wizard to add the
printer local or network.

1st add a local port for your printer that is connected to your xp computer
on the desktop system, here are the steps to follow:

Right click on the shared printer in windows explorer or printer list,
select properties, select ports, select add new port, select local port,
type name like this: \\computername\\printername
example: \\mshome\\hp-deskjet

Do not change your settings to select the new port or your printer will no
longer work with the desktop system. just add it to the list of available
ports.

Go to the vista computer, add printer, add local printer, create a new port
using the exact same name. Follow remaining prompts, make sure the vista
computer has the correct drivers for the printer, and all should work.
