i have been trying to work this out:
have a home network adsl router with wireless connecting via ethernet to a
xp desktop and a vista laptop wirelessly. the vista can see the xp through
full network map:
vista === WAp===Gateway==internet
||
XP ====Switch

they have the same workgroup name and can ping ip but not by name. tried
that network magic program which would see each other but not access and
their site syas its firewall related but i have removed all firewall software
and disbled the windows firewall.

1. If you can ping the IP but name, make sure netbios over tcp/ip is enabled.
2. if you can ping but access, check the permission.

What do you receive it if using net use \\remotepcipaddress? Post back with the system error code.
