I believe you are thinking about virtualization. The Microsoft program
that does this is Virtual PC 2007. You install VPC and then make
"virtual machines" running various other operating systems. Then to run
XP for example, you simply start VPC and choose XP.
Virtualization is extremely useful for testing software under other
operating systems, running older programs that won't work on the host
OS, etc. The downside to virtualization - as opposed to dual-booting -
is 1) that it does take quite a bit of computing overhead so you need
plenty of RAM; 2) the hardware in a virtual machine is also virtual and
not the same as the actual physical hardware in your computer so doing
high-end 3D gaming is Right Out.
