Vista, yesterday's updates and my lost dvd player

Hi all,

my dvd player worked find yesterday until the updates auto-downloaded. Now
it's missing. I called Dell and they helped me to roll back my computer,
which brought my DVD player back. However, during the night the updates
installed themselves again. I am back to not having a DVD player. Any
suggestions on how to get this back to the way it was? My driver was
up-to-date so it's not that.

Hi Cassira, no proper solution I'm afraid but roll back again and change your
windows update settings to 'check for updates but choose to dowload and
install' at least this will give you a chance to reveiw whats being
downloaded, its not necessary to install everything.

Thank you for your suggestion. I think this will solve my problem.

This has happened to me as well, has anybody notified Microsoft concerning
this? I think if it's happened to 2 people I'm sure it's happened to a bunch
more.....

Hi guys, here is your solution: You need to pull out 2 entries in your
registry. Vista's lastest update made my DVD disappear as well on my
Toshiba Pioneer DVD drive. As always, back up your registry first before
any changes are made.
Start, run, regedit. Drill down to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-
E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
remove the entries that start with upper or lower, even if it ends with
..bak. Viola, restart your PC, laptop, it should be back. Karen

YOU really saved mi PC today, I was almost ready to FORMAT !!!.... Nice
work... I wonder how you discovered this ??? I mean it is incredible to

They could have found it by Google searching "Missing CD" or "lost CD" or
something along those lines and adding their operating system to the search
parameters.. This solution has been around for years - it is more of a
third-party software issue - in that the third party software mis-modified
something.

The solution works for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista - and may
continue to be viable in Windows 7.

Now is a great time to point you to one of the easiest ways to find

Example you might find in your search - an answer I have given in these
newsgroup many times:

Do NOT be afraid of the registry hack here.
It is SAFE and has helped MANY people.
Respect the registry, don't fear it.

1) Log on with Administrative Privileges

2) Open the Registry Editor:
a) Go to Start then select Run.
b) Type regedit and click OK.

3) Backup you registry by:
a) Highlight My Computer by clicking on it once.
b) Click File (Windows XP) or Registry (Windows 2000), then Export
Registry File.
c) Select export range All; to ensure your entire registry is backed up
completely.
d) Select where you would like to save this backup, name the File, and
Click on the SAVE button.

4) Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values:
a) Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\

b) Highlight this key by left clicking on it once.
c) On the right hand side delete the values Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

5) Restart your computer.
