Vista64 doesn't recognize smart card reader

I have to set up a smart card reader on Vista Home Premium 64 bit for a
user, but cannot get it to be recognized. It is an SCR331, about 6 years
old. I have downloaded Vista64 drivers from SCMMicro but though the card
reader will work on an XP machine, it will not work on Vist64. When I
install it, or reboot and it detects new hardware, and tell it where I
downloaded the drivers it says this folder does not contain the necessary
drivers. If I look at the 32bit drivers online it says there is a firmware
upgrade but I do not want to apply that and have the reader stop working on
the XP machine as well.
Has anyone solved this problem?
Mich

From what you've written, it sounds as though there are no 64-bit drivers
for this hardware for Vista. You must have 64-bit drivers; 32-bit ones will
not work. If there are no 64-bit drivers, you will need to get a newer
smart card reader that is supported in Vista 64-bit.

Looks like 64-bit to me:
http://www.scmmicro.com/support/pc-s...downloads.html

SCR331/SCR531 CCID USB Firmware
Firmware: Sorry, there is no firmware for this device or operating system
available.
SCR331/SCR531 CCID USB - Windows® XP 64-bit Driver/Installer
Name
SCR3xxx Win 32/64 PC/SC Driver
Download
SCR3xxx_4.31_4.44.zip Download File

I'm thinking there must be a Vista setting somewhere I am not aware of.
Smart card services are running automatically.

Then I'm sorry but I don't know. AFAIK, there is no Seekrit Setting in Vista
that would cause your smart card to not be recognized, but I'd check with
the SCM Micro tech support people.

Sorry I was unable to help you.

Solved:
I tried to update the firmware on an identical reader from Vista but was
denied access to this function - can't recall the exact message, to do with
permission to modify resources of some kind.
I used the same firmware update software from an XP machine and was able to
update it. The XP machine then "Found new hardware".
On the Vista 64 machine I then installed drivers, then inserted the card
reader and it was recognized immediately and now works. The original reader
required the same firmware update.
