Hello all,
If this is the wrong place please let me know which newsgrp I should post it
in.

I can remote into my home PC, Vista64, from Work, Xp32 Pro.
But when I try to get in from home to the work PC it won't let me.
Tells me talk to my network Admin.

Now I have the IP for the work PC, work network Admin gave it to me.
But I still am having no luck. Network guy tells me It should work and
pinging the ip won't work from home.
I found that odd but I am no network guy .

Does anyone know of any issues with remote desktop and 64bit /32bit systems?

All the settings seem to be set correctly. I am at a loss. And my network
Admin isn't much help.
One of the kinds that would have us all back on DOS if he could. !!

Thanks
Deasun.

Hi,

Likely it is that the work system is behind a firewall that is blocking port
3389 - the one that is used for Remote Desktop. Unless the network admin
creates and exception for it to allow incoming traffic, you won't be able to
use Remote Desktop to connect.

There is no problem using Remote Desktop between 32 and 64 bit systems, or
between Vista and XP Pro (either direction).

I use rdp all day to many different systems from both Vista x86 and x64. I
also occasionally rdp back to my systems of both flavours from clients XP
computers. As Rick said it sounds like the problem is that port 3389 is
either being blocked by a firewall or not being port forwarded to your work
computer. Some more details of your connection would help. Are you using a
VPN to your work network? Are you trying to rdp direct to your work
computer? Has the firewall at work been configured for this?

thanks all for the replies.

1] No VPN. Direct Remote Desktop connection.
2] Yes directly to work PC.
3] Thats the network guys job. He says its done but I am not getting much
help from him.
He can be a pain sometimes. Even though for my job I am suppose to
have this.
Will give him a few days more I guess. then have to go to Mgers

Thanks again.
Just wanted to make sure there was nothign out there I did not know of.

You will also need to watch that you are not on the same network IP ranges,

Do other people also rdp to their work computers? It may be that the network
is set up so that different ports map to different computers. You may have
to configure your home computer for the correct port. You can do this with a
switch at the command line when starting Remote Desktop or by using an .RDP
file.
