Vista's Calendar Notification not Working

It used to be that when I created an event in Vista Calendar it would pop up
a notification for me at the designated time whether I opened up Calendar or
not. Now the notification only pops up if I actually open Calendar itself,
and that could be days after the event has expired. How can I correct this
problem?
