Vista's Drag To Taskbar Bug

In all previous versions of Windows, if you had something (like a file in
explorer) selected, and you wanted to drag it to another open program (and
you have auto-hide enabled for the taskbar), you would just drag the
selected item to the taskbar, it would pop-up and you would drag to program
you wanted in the taskbar to bring that program to the front, and then drag
your selection into that new program.

HOWEVER, in Vista, dragging your selection to the taskbar with auto-hide
enabled does NOT bring up the taskbar from hiding. So, you have NO idea
where the program you want to open is on the taskbar.

Does anybody know why Vista does this?

I found this problem very annoying as well. I don't think it's a bug or anything like that, but I found a failry easy way to overcome this problem. After "picking up" the file you want to move, just press Alt + Tab while holding the mouse button, change the program you are viewing, and then release.

I don't quite understand the problem you allude to, but I've never had any
problems dragging and dropping shortcuts to the Taskbar.

Be sure the Taskbar is unlocked before-hand, and you should have no problems
at all.

Donald, you do not understand the problem here.

Say you have your browser open and you also have photoshop open in the
background. You want to drag an image from a webpage over into photoshop
to edit it. You would drag the image to the program you want shown in
the taskbar (in this case photoshop), and photoshop would now show on
top and you drag the image into photoshop.

Well, if you have autohide taskbar enabled, when you drag your image to
the bottom of the screen, the taskbar should pop up. Well, in Vista,
this DOES NOT HAPPEN for some reason! This makes working with multiple
programs extremely difficult.

Why hasn't anybody else (except for me and TK) reported this HUGE bug?!
How could MS let this problem get past testing?

What happens if you tap the WINKEY when you are dragging the image? I know
this is a clunky workaround, but it works. This bug has been reported many
times.

This might be related to some security stuff, where some parts of
Windows is no longer directly connected. Also, you may notice that
dragging icons on Start menu may fail because of an error. E.g. drag and
drop Start Menu > programs > myprogram shortcut to Start Menu (top
level) may fail.

I don't know if this forum has found a solution/fix/bug, whatever for
this, but this is the first post that EXACTLY expressed my concerns over
dragging links to the taskbar.

What I did find however is that, if you drag your whatever; link, image
or document, to a BLANK area of the taskbar that will cause all of the
windows to minimize and then you can continue to drag to the destination
of your choice on the taskbar.

The whole point of dragging like this was to eliminate the use of the
keyboard as others in this thread have suggested.

Now if I/we/anyone can figure out why you can drag directly to the
taskbar into another application that would be PERFECT!!! :geek:
