thanks for your HELP!

Learn how to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Applies to all editions of Windows Vista.
Which edition of Windows Vista am I using?

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) includes many important updates that help
improve the reliability, performance, and security of Windows Vista. For more
information, see What's included in Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).

The recommended (and easiest) way to get SP1 is to turn on AUTOMATIC
UPDATING in Windows Update in Control Panel, and wait for Windows Vista to
notify you that SP1 is ready to install. You just need a few clicks to begin
the installation and the rest of the process is automatic. You can also
manually download SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center.

To learn if SP1 is already installed

•

Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, right-click Computer,
and then click Properties.

If Service Pack 1 is listed in the Windows edition section, SP1 is already
installed on your computer and you do not need to follow the instructions
below.
Before you begin

Before you install SP1, do the following:
•

Back up important files. Because this is a significant update to the Windows
operating system, it is a good idea to back up your personal files before
beginning the installation.
•

Make sure you have enough free disk space. Installing SP1 can require a
substantial amount of free disk space, up to 4.5 gigabytes (GB) in some
cases, though much of that space will be free again after the installation.
If you need to create free disk space on your computer, see Strategies for
freeing disk space.
•

Update any device drivers as necessary. You can do this by using Windows
Update, or by going to the device manufacturer's website. For more
information, see Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly.
•

If you have an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) connected to your
computer, disconnect the connecting serial cable before installing SP1. The
installation automatically attempts to detect devices connected to serial
ports, and UPS equipment can cause problems with the detection process. It's
fine to leave your computer connected to a UPS for power.
•

If you are using a laptop computer, connect it to an AC electrical outlet
and don’t unplug or restart the computer during installation.
•

Close all open programs. Note that if your antivirus program is on, it might
slow the installation by scanning each file that is part of the installation.

To install SP1 by using Windows Update

If your computer is set to automatically install updates, you will be
prompted by Windows Update to install SP1. Follow the instructions on the
screen. If you are not prompted to install SP1, follow these steps:
1.

Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
2.

Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, click All Programs, and
then click Windows Update.
3.

In the left pane, click Check for updates.
4.

Click View available updates. In the list of updates, select Service Pack
for Microsoft* Windows (KB936330), and then click Install. If you are
prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or
provide confirmation.
Notes

* If the listing for SP1 is not listed, you might need to install some
other updates before installing SP1. Install any updates listed as
Recommended or Important, return to the Windows Update page, and then click
Check for updates.
* If you do not see SP1 listed even after installing the recommended or
important updates, other conditions might be preventing Windows Update from
offering SP1. For more information, go to the Service Pack 1 article on the
Microsoft website.

5.

Follow the instructions on your screen. The computer will restart several
times during the installation.
6.

After Setup is complete, log on to your computer at the Windows logon
prompt. You will receive a message indicating whether the update was
successful.

To manually install SP1 by using the Microsoft Download Center

1.

Depending on whether you are running the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of
Windows Vista, download the update for 32-bit versions or download the update
for 64-bit versions.

To determine whether you have the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of Windows
Vista, click the Start button Picture of the Start button, right-click
Computer, and then click Properties.

To install SP1 immediately, click Open or Run, and then follow the
instructions on your screen. To install SP1 later, click Save to copy the
installation file to your computer. When you are ready to install the service
pack, open the file you copied to your computer.
1.

Follow the instructions on your screen. The computer will restart several
times during the installation.
2.

After Setup is complete, log on to your computer at the Windows logon
prompt. You will receive a message indicating whether the update was
successful.
NoteIf you experience problems with peripheral devices after manually
downloading and installing SP1 (for example, a printer no longer works, or
your computer's sound card doesn't work correctly), a device driver might
have been damaged during the installation. To fix the problem, uninstall the
driver for the device, go to the device manufacturer's website, and download
and install a new copy of the device driver. For more information, see Update
a driver for hardware that isn't working properly.

To uninstall SP1

If you installed SP1 yourself, you can uninstall it. If SP1 came
preinstalled with your edition of Windows Vista, however, it cannot be
uninstalled.
1.

Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, click Control Panel, and
then click Programs.
2.

Under Programs and Features, click View installed updates.
3.

On the Uninstall an update page, click Service Pack for Microsoft* Windows
(KB936330), and then click Uninstall.
4.

Follow the instructions on your screen.
----------------------------------------------------------------
The instructions i now need to follow is to reinstall everything.
thanks for you help.. TaurArian

I have also had problems with Vista Service Pack 1. All Lenovo Thinkpads were
negatively impacted. One took over 2.5 hours to install. The user was down
most all of the morning. Another wiped out the Audio drivers and required a
full system drivers update to get it working properly again. Only one user on
a Dell desktop had the chance to postpone the reboot...all others found their
system in a state of reboot without a chance to postpone. All systems are
set by policy to update automatically from my WSUS server. Updates are set to
download automatically to clients, but the client must click the shield to
install. Something seemed to go wrong with that setting this time.

I wanna say thanks for posting this... I have been trying to download the SP1
and my lap top keeps crashing while downloading... Now that I have seen this
post I won't bother with it. Can't be that important if it's crashing the
PC.... Thanks again

If you don't want any more security updates, fine. Otherwise...

Support for Vista Gold (no Service Packs) ended on Tuesday, 13 April 2010.
Computers still running Vista Gold "will no longer receive software updates
[e.g., SP1] from Windows Update" until SP1 has been manually installed
(which will require that several Prerequisite Updates be installed first).
See
http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/win...ces-packs.aspx.

• What does it mean if my version of Windows is no longer supported?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...f-support-mean

That being said, free unlimited installation and compatibility support for
Vista SP1 has been extended a third time & now runs through 10 August 2010.
Some issues may require more advanced support for which there is a charge.

Here's my good experience.

I had tried for over a year to upgrade an HP laptop with SP1 using many
methods. I had also seen others with HP laptops have trouble with this
upgrade. So with Gold(RTM) support running out I openned a support issue
with MS. I tried what they suggested to no avail. One was to repair Vista
from the DVD which I did not have. MS sent me a free DVD that I used to
repair VISTA and low and behold I successfully installed SP1 also from a DVD
I had ordered. Then I installed many patches before it offerred me SP2 and I
installed that with no problems.
