I have Vista Ultimate on 4 machines and MS Visual Studio 2008 on three of
them. All installations went smoothly without a hitch.
On two of the machines I had Visual Studio 2005 installed prior to Visual
Studio 2005. They appear to be able to coexist. I use all of them heavily
and daily.
I got a disk form MS with autorun exec I think. I am an MSDN subscriber.
before getting the disk I tried to download VS2008 a few times and open the
iso image only to find that the files size was 2.3 Gb but the directory was
almost completely empty. With the exception of readme.txt file my browsers
(I used winimage.exe) saw nothing. I burned the file on DVD with the same
result. I posted on MSDN sites and nobody could give me any meaningful info
with the exception of one guy who said that he got his disk a week before
and I should expect mine as well. It did arrive a few days later.
If you have a MS DVD with VS2008 and Vista Ultimate then unless you do
something strange, there should be no problem. I also want to add that as
typical of me I do a few installs, some of them fail for reason of my doing
something stupid and I end up reinstalling it or even Vista and then doing a
new install of VS2008. Thus in fact I installed VS2008 perhaps 10 times
until finally I got a hang of it and had precisely what I wanted.
Now, I just checked MSDN site and it turns out people have found a solution
which appears to be a complete solution for this problem.
Check this thread:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/Sho...453549#2453549
It appears this guy uninstalled IIS temporarily and then reinstalled it. I
actually was about to suggest to you to do the opposite.
This appears to be another thread offering a different solution:

Some more:

How to Troubleshoot Setup for the Web AutoUpdate Feature

Appears to be another thread with a guy claiming that he solved the same
problem with a tip:

To get more just key at MSDN for "Web Authoring component." There are more
threads over there.
Good luck, Vista is there for you.
