Hey Im no pro - but this took me like three days to upgrade from XP on a
medium powerful desktop. I learned some things - but take or leave these
comments. To be truthful - upgrading was my worst ever IT experience. But
it is a pretty slick OS now it works.

I had many, many problems. These are the largest each of which took a long
time to fix.

Step one: Uninstall all your anti-virus products, especially Norton. If you
don’t do this now, and they cause you problems, you will have to visit
symantec’s website and download a tool to remove them.

Step two: disconnect all USB devices. Don’t make the installer’s work any
harder than it is.

Step three: If your secondary hard drive isn’t recognized or readable,
disconnect it in the BIOS, disable it in the device manager. Reboot. Then
enable it in BIOS, then enable in device manager. (If you don’t know how to
do this, call someone.) One of these worked - I'm not sure which.

Step four: If your DVD/CDROM is stuffed up (as mine was for 2 days) you are
in tough shape. You can’t even reinstall and do clean-boot. Forget installing
office 2007. If this is the case, you need to see Microsoft Knowledge Base
30553 and do what it says. This brings you into advanced territory - so be
careful – but it really works.

Elsewhere Ive had a pretty good rant - MS lost one of its most passionate
defenders.

Paul,
How many times have you read the words: "Buy new, don't upgrade."

People like you make me puke! You don't know what you are doing, have faulty
equipment, too tight to buy a clean install, and just WHINGE.
We all hope that Microsoft has lost you; including from this site!

Hear, hear! How dare anyone criticize our beloved Microsoft! What nerve! Off
with his head now. We Wintards need to stick together and support the
unsupportable no matter how much reality tells us otherwise.

Love and Kisses,
Doris

Mick, you are an asshole! People like YOU make me puke! The
OP is merely passing on his experience regarding the
installation of Vista and what he said may be helpful to
others. Unlike you he is at least providing helpful
information. AND, it is not always necessary to do a clean
install if you are upgrading from a well maintained and
trouble free XP installation. A lot of people have had their
faith in Microsoft severely tested because of the many
issues regarding the Vista release and this group provides a
conduit to share information that helps resolve problems.

Suck it up Mick, and please do grow up!

Mick: You need to take a chill pill, and mellow out. Most average Joe's out
there don't want to cough up $160 (or much higher for full) for a Vista
upgrade. I lucked out in that I got a *free* upgrade disk for my laptop
which took seven weeks to arrive. I then bought the same thing off Ebay for
half the price, and it arrived in about 4 days. My pain, was trying to use
various tools and software to backup my existing laptop files. After several
hours, I "gave in" and just did the update in place. I did a dual boot
install on my main desktop, and both Vista's are running great! Give the
dude a break. A lot of us spent a lot of time prepping for Vista.

Trying to help a few folks with what i learned mofo.
Maybe you will never have faulty equipment, slender funds.
And maybe you will never have a computer problem that you don't have time to
fix.
But if those hardships should ever come to pass, perhaps this mail you sent
will pop into mind.
