I want to experiment with setting up a Server 2008 PDC and then connecting
an additional server and XP client to it. But I also need them to have
internet access without impacting my exisiting domain and network.

Is this possible to do, and if so how do I go about setting up the network
component?

Vista x64 Host running VPC SP1,
Server 2008 Ent x32 Guest (x2)
XP Pro SP3 (x1)

Regards, Andrew.

The best solution is to run the domain on a private virtual network (Local
Only in VPC), and connect this to the physical network through a NAT router.
Since you are running on a client OS as host, you need to run the router in
a vm (as ICS is not really compatible with a domain setup).

What were you planning to run on the second server? Is it compatible
with also running RRAS as a NAT router? If not, do you have enough memory to
run an additional vm as a router? W2k server will run in 128M and you could
do it with 64M in Linux if you are familiar with that.

I was thinking of running Server 2008 again to try Exchange 2007/2010 and
DFS.

Thinking it through all I really need the internet for is to download the
latest updates. Nothing to stop me setting up the VM with access to the
host, and then putting it back to Local Only once I'm done.

If I decide to go the route of setting up a small VM as a NAT what do I do.
Put Server2008/XP on as Local Only and then give the VM(NAT) access to the
host? If I do this how do the two on local only connect to the VM(NAT)?

Andrew.

You give the router two NICs, one in Local Only and one connected to the
physical NIC of the host.

If you are running a domain you need to make changes to DNS, but that
has nothing to do with virtual machines. It is just the same with physical
networks.

I would not run either a DC or Exchange server as a router.
