I used to have the volume control located in the notification area. However,
recently, the volume control frequently disappear after started. How can I
set up it appear all the time? What can I do if it doesn't get shown after
the computer start?
Thanks!

How is this a "Windows Update" mechanism related issue? Are you saying you
updated something using Windows Update and then your volume control icon
(speaker near the clock) disappeared?

My suggestions are simple.

Now - because of where you posted - I will have to assume a lot (you gave no
information about your operating system) - and my assumption will be... You
have Windows XP.

First - see if you can just toggle it back.

Volume icon is not displayed in the notification area, and you may receive
an error message when you try to add it
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319095

Second - download and install the latest drivers and software for your
particular sound device from the actual hardware manufacturer (either of
your computer system/model or of the sound/model.) Then verify the first
after the installation and a reboot.

Next time - provide some basics...

You can obtain and supply the edition and version information:

Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
--> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.

The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name and edition) while the line starting with the word
"version" will give you the rest of the story. Post _both_ in response
to this message verbatim. No paraphrasing - instead - ensure
character-for-character copying.

What version of Internet Explorer are you currently using? Easy to find
out. Open Internet Explorer and while that is in-focus, press and hold
the "ALT" key on your keyboard. With the "ALT" key still pressed, press
(just once, no holding) the "H" key. Now, with the "ALT" key still
pressed, press (just once, no holding) the "A" key. That will bring up
the "About Internet Explorer" window. It will give you the exact version
you are using - repeat what you see there in response to this message.

64-bit version of the Windows operating system

All that can be important in solving your specific issues.

Right-click on the taskbar and select Properties. Turn off "Hide inactive
icons". Does that fix the problem?

Harry.

Thanks for reply.
I tried this before, it does not work. What I found is, if I give enough
time for boot-up for example, switch on the computer and weiting for about
10 minutes then log in XP, and then don't touch the machine for about
another 10 minutes, then most likely the volume control would be there. Most
time the volume control once appear it will be there until shut-down. Not
every time but very often, if I start the computer and immediately login and
click thing, the volume control will not be shown.

Thanks for reply.
I guess I should post to windowsxp.newuser, however, I am not that new, and
what more is I found that group is not so active -- the latest question is
on 1/6/2010 when I was going to post my question, and I somehow thinking
this may be windows update related issue, because the system will check
updates immediately after the system boot-up, which uses lots of system
resources and results not enough time to load the volume control to the
notification area (mostly if I clicked something at the same time after
boot).

I never get any error message.

This is just what I want but I don't know how.

> Next time - provide some basics...

Read the article more thoroughly.
It tells you how to do what you need to do and ignore the fact you are not
getting the 'error' it says you may be getting. Follow the methods.
