volume/brightness image

I noticed somone else had the same question but never recieved an answer.
Recently vista has no longer had the volume and brightness images appear when
using the shortcut keys with the function key. The "switch between windows no
longer functions either, but rather shows the same thing as alt-tab. I don't
know if these are related but I would like to have all these features
working. Anyone have any advice?

I know the shortcuts to adjust the volume and brightness, i just dont have
the image pop up every time i make that adjustment. Anyone else know how to
turn this feature back on?
