Contact your computer's manufacturer for help. We have absolutely no idea
the manufacturer of the computer, your operating system, what you have
recently done to the computer to cause part of the keyboard to malfunction
or who made the keyboard because you didn't tell us enough information.

Using Vista home version on a hp pavillion dv7 1428ca laptop; was in msconfig/startup lately trying t
disable useless programs. Reenabled everything since problem started but to no avail. Drivers all seem to b
up to date, maybe a BIOS reload?

You have apparently disabled HP's keyboard driver for your laptop. Don't
know the program's name for your laptop.

My HP DV type computer laptop has the following drivers for it's defined
"Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard with HP QLB" This
computer has the row of lighted buttons across the top that has multimedia
buttons, as well as, the sound mute and volume controls.

In Driver File Details (control panel, keyboard, select the properties) I
see four drivers listed. They are:

C:\Windows\system32\Drivers\HpqKBFiltr.sys
C:\Windows\system32\Drivers\i8042prt.sys
C:\Windows\system32\Drivers\kbdclass.sys
C:\Windows\system32\Drivers\wdfcoinstaller01005.dl l

Now on my other system I see that the i8042prt.sys and the kbdclass.sys
drivers are standard ones with a standard keyboard. See if the other two or
similar are showing in your driver file details.
