Volume icon missing from notification area

My "Volume" icon has disappeared from the notification area (the same area
when the clock is). I have even turned OFF the "Hide inactive icons" feature,
but it's still not showing. How can I get the volume icon back into my
notification area?

Go to the Sound in the Control Panel. I think at the bottom there should be
something that says "Show volume icon in notification area" (or similar).
Make sure that this is checked.
