Volume Icon in taskbar.

Hello Folks,
When using computer last night, all seemed well with no problems.
After switch on today, the volume icon in the bottom right taskbar area
disappeared.
After going into Taskbar and Start Menu Properties, the option to select it
is greyed out and therefore impossible to switch back on.
I am sure that a genius out there will be able to help me . . .
