Hello,
Purchased: New Systemax Computer from TigerDirect.com,
Has Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64bit installed.
The installed O.S. has a O.E.M. volume license number.
The unit came with a Windows O.S. Cd with it's own product key.
Can I change the volume license number to the individual
computer product key without reinstalling the operating system.?
If this is possible how do I proceed?
Does the different product key automatically activate?

sincerely,

Benjamin Labate

OEM Volume License number belongs to the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer )

No such thing. OEM and Volume licenses are two very different things.

No. But, again, it's either an OEM license (most likely) or a volume
license.

Leave the computer as it is. There is no benefit to changing the product
key.

Hello,
Thanks for the information, do appreciate all who replied, their time and
knowledge.
Reason for asking : Plan on upgrading to Windows7, when available, do not
know if there will be a problem with activation and this type of product key.

take care.

What you are probably experiencing is the installed license key is not the
same as that on the computer (or CD case and if you actually got a physical
Vista CD, consider yourself lucky.) If this is the case what has occurred
is that Systemax has used their key (which is a special key issued by
Microsoft) to allow the hard drives cloned for many different computers from
one master drive to have their operating systems installed, therefore the
same key will show on many physical installations. Dell, Gateway, HP, Acer
and almost all other major computer manufacturers are using the same type of
numbers. They can not be used to reinstall from the recovery disks or CDs
that are supplied with the computer. The sticker issued with the CD or that
which is stuck to the computer case is the key used for any reinstall.

You will not have any problems upgrading to to Win 7 either using the
preinstalled version of Vista or later using the physical CD/key you have
been supplied with.

Thank You for replying.
I did not have the terminology to express what you did in a complete and
easy to understand statement.
Systemax was a surprise. Good price, O.S. and Mb driver cd's, no hidden
partition and no trail software. The hardware is from well established
companies, suppyling middle level hardware. Do not know if their other
products are on the same level, I was pleasantly surprised with this purchase.
take care.
take care.
