VPC 2007 and Windows Server 2003 and Vista Business

I wish to install Microsoft Performancepoint Server 2007 on my Vista
Business system but the program will only install on Windows Server 2003.
Can I set up VPC 2007 so that I have Vista Business as the client and
Windows Server 2003 as the server?
Also, can I set the system up so that I don't use VPC at all and simply use
Vista Business as I now do? TIA David

Yes - just install VPC 2007 - build the Server 2003 VM.
Read the help about setting up the network in the VM so your Vista machine
can see the Server 2003 VM and install your server application
Performancepoint Server 2007

No - Performancepoint Server 2007 is a primarily a server application and
requires a server class OS for the bits you want to install that are the
SERVER bits - as per the minimum system requirements at
http://www.microsoft.com/business/pe...uirements.aspx

if you have a multicore CPU I suggest you install VMWARE server (free) that
takes advantage of all your cores and gives that processing power to the
CLIENT OS inside the virtual machine.

Thank you and thank you for the VMWare suggestion. What I was trying to say
directly below is that if I don't need to run the Performancepoint Server
2007 and am just doing regular work, e.g. web surfing or word processing, do
I still take a performance hit for using the virtual machine or does this
only happen if I'm using the Performancepoint Server 2007?

Having an VM running will impact the performance of the host operating
system as it requires memory and processing power to keep it alive. If you
don;t need the VM running then just suspend it back to disk, at which point
with no VMs running VPC does not consumer any resources or cause any
performance hit.
Or have I not understood your question?

Thank you. You answered my question. Also which free version of VMWare do
I download? Server, client or otherwise? Thanks...

Personally you can go with Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 or Virtual Server 2005
R2 (both free)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...c/default.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...virtualserver/

From VMWare - only Virtual Server is free.

Thank you. But does VPC 2007 or Virtual Sever 2005 use both processor
cores? This other response to my query from Tie Various implied that they
do not...

"if you have a multicore CPU I suggest you install VMWARE server (free) that
takes advantage of all your cores and gives that processing power to the
CLIENT OS inside the virtual machine.

I just received a message from Microsoft stating that they are going to
package Performancepoint Server 2007 together with VPC 2007 and it will be
available in roughly one week.
