The 17MB is for the application, not the VM. The VM's memory usage
does not show up in the tasklist. It will show up as a chuck in the
bars on the left.
Have you installed the VM Additions in the VM? What OS are you using
in the VM?
How to speed up a VM on a laptop:
1. Make sure you're running at full power, no speedstep, etc.
2. Move the VM off your main OSes drive to a fast USB2, FireWire, or
eSata drive
