W Gen Advantage Notification Tool locks up

I am rebuilding a Windows XP Home machine from a clean install of OEM XP Home
with SP2. After initial installation completed, I installed Mother Board and
LAN drivers, configured networking and started to install updates from
Windows Update without (re) registering the copy.

The following installed successfully:

Windows Installer 3.1
KB898461
WGA Validation Tool KB892130

Auto update got WGA Advantage Notification KB905474 but it has "cancelled"
against status in "Review update History" under microsoftupdate/V6/

Thereafter any attempt to download from the V6 page, when Custom or Express
button is clicked locks up IE, Explorer and any clicking on the tool bar.
After a while the hour glass appears and then mouse movements stop and the
machine is completely locked requiring a power off.

Subsequently a combination of "Use Administrator Option" and Automatic
Updates has installed a total of 47 updates. Also I managed to register the
copy of XP successfully against the original owner details.

Automatic updates shows one update has been downloaded - "WGA Advantage
Notification KB905474". If I install it manually and watch the progress the
PB gets to 60% and the same lock ups occur.

When I tried installing Windows Media 10 and it wanted to Validate windows -
same lock up on clicking.

I have checked the Registry Permissions, Internet Explorer settings,
re-registered a bunch of DLL's as per other threads, here all to no avail. I
have disabled Windows Firewall; there is no other firewall or AV installed as
the machine is behind NAT firewall and a new install on a newly formatted
partition last night.

Windows has never been this difficult before and is becoming an unacceptable
use of time. Suggestions welcome please.

I can publish bits of windowsupdate.log if helpful

For anyone interested - not many by the look of it.

I have run update.exe from the folder where wganotify is sitting as per
later posting in this newsgroup.

Machine hangs in exactly the same way, but the update installation wizard
shows "Finishing Installation" and "Details: Running Processes after install".

Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing. Right clicking the task bar does nothing.
Explorer has an hour glass. Clicking the start button does nothing.

Suggestions from "Professionals" welcome.
