When I go to the update site, it tells me it's checking for the latest
version but then nothing happens. I reinstalled "iuctl.inf", got to the point
where it asks if i want to install the newer version, get messages that it's
100% downloaded and registered, but still get no further than the "checking
version" page.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Running XP Home SP2

Try this:
!!Be sure to click OK or hit ENTER for each one!!

Click Start, click Run and then type this:
net.exe stop wuauserv

Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll

Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wups.dll

Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll

Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll

Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll

Click Start, click Run and then type this:
net.exe start wuauserv

Now, reboot and try the Windows Update site again.

While this solution does not work in 100% of the cases, the only way to
know if it'll work for you is to try it, but, yes, it's safe to try in
all flavors of WinXp.

Thank you dak, for a well written and great fix. I had the same problem as
billtin59, and resetting the windows update .dll files worked for me....after
rebooting, I was able to fully update my system. Once again, thank you dak,
and well done.
