After countless hours of trying to resolve this issue, I have finally found a
solid fix. I had tried everything from re-registering dlls, reinstalling
service packs, merging regisrty keys, the senlogon folder, etc etc etc. I
finally found the fix that worked. I like to have as few services and
processes running as possible so the only networking component I had
installed was TCP/IP. This was the catalyst of my problems. I resolved this
huge problem by carrying out these 5 steps:
1. Installed Client for Microsoft Networks
2. Rebooted
3. Deleted the Software Distribution Folder
4. Cleared my temp internet / history / cache
5. Went to windows update and the installs worked like a dream
Thanks Nocturnal and a few others for steering me in the right direction. I
was on the brink of a reformat!!
