Update Rollup repeatedly fails to install - 0x80070005 - Access Denied.
Cannot find any information as to what part of system the update is trying to
access and failing on -- e.g. nothing in Event Viewer; nothing in message
box. Doesn't matter if I try from web-site or from downloaded version. I am
part of the Administrators group on the local PC. Have not had problems
installing any other updates. Any suggestions appreciated?

Hi Steven
Having same issue.
Tried building a windows 2000 with sp4 cd - no resolve.
Tried formating unit and started again-no resolve.
Tried using GFI to roll out updates-some units took the update good and
others still indicate sp4 not installed.

Look at the log(s) which were generated by the install attempt.
Search for changed files on the date of the update if you aren't
sure of the filename(s).

Compare your logs with other logs which record successful installs.

It's possible also that the the update package has a verbose
logging option of its own you could try.

In any case get some context for your error code from a log.
E.g. it is probably a permission problem either in the registry
or in the file system.

Unfortunately often the messages in these logs are too vague
for specific troubleshooting. In that case you can try using
RegMon and FileMon to supplement the details in the regular
diagnostics.

Good luck

Hi Robert
Thanks for the tip.

I will check the logs and see what I can decipher from them.
If anything good, I will post my resolution.

On my server the following keys were set to read only:

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Works/6.0/Calendar &
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Works/7.0/Calendar

Once I added administrators and gave the group full access, the Update
rollup worked. You may find the same is true on your systems.
