W2K updates gone bad

I ran updates from the Windows 2000 site this morning and lost my desktops
for all users. I could log in to each of them, part of the desktop would
flash, then the background would load, but nothing else. I attempted to fix
Windows by using the W2K disk through a repair set-up. Now I am getting a
"STOP: coooo263 {Driver entry point not found}
\SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\DXAPI.SYS device driver..."

Any ideas?

Can I at least recover my files if I need to rebuild software?
