W2K3 Site Links question

Hello,

I am learning about AD sites and I am confused about how to link two sites
together.

As a practice I have created two sites, Columbus and KC, and when I created
them I assigned them the DEFAULTIPSITELINK object.

I have now created a second site link, called 'columbus-2-kc'.

My question is: How do I link my two sites, Columbus and KC, to this new
site link, columbus-2-kc?

Do I just change the cost of the columbus-2-kc site link to a value lower
than DEFAULTIPSITELINK? Or do I have to physically link the Columbus and KC
sites to the new site link?

Regards, Anastas

Hello Mikoyan,

If you create new sites in AD sites and services and move the DC to it's
correct site you can wait that the topology will be built automatically.
If AD is working correct you don't have to do it manual. Exccept if you have
the need for specifying your own replication topology this has to be done
manual.

See here for best practise and more details:

Hi Meinolf,

Thanks for the very quick reply and the thorough links.

So if I understand correctly, in my example if I leave both the
DEFAULTIPSITELINK and the columbus-2-kc site links in the intersite-site
transports IP folder and do nothing else, the optimum topology will be built
by AD?

Am I correct in thinking that AD decides on the optimum topology using the
'cost' associated with each site link?

Thanks again for taking the time to help.

Regards Anastas

Hello Mikoyan,

Yes, the Knowledge Consistency Checker (KCC) runs by default every 15 minutes
to check the replication topology, if nothing is changed the cost is set
to default.

If you change the cost manual replicaiton occurs according to the cost.
