Hello all,
I have several Windows Server 2003 SP1 systems and I was trying to install
June 2005 updates on these systems but I am getting an error:

1- Pointing to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com takes me to:
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us

2- I get this message: "We've made improvements to our website. To download
the new version of the software and begin using Windows Update, please click
Install Now" and a button [Install Now].

3- I click on the "Install Now" button, I first get a page "Windows Update
is downloading and installing the updated software and below there is a line
that first reads "downloading 10%" and which is counting up to "downloading
100%". Then it stops and I get the following error: Error number: 0x80070005

4- Then I've looked at windowsupdate.log and found these messages:

*************
** START ** Setup: Downloading client CABs
*********
* Main CAB URL:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6...6/NetServer/en
* MUI CAB URL:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6.../NetServer/mui
* Download directory: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WebSetup
*********
** END ** Setup: Downloading client CABs
*************
*************
** START ** Setup: Installing client binaries
*********
* Download directory: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WebSetup
* Stop and start service: Yes
FATAL: SelfUpdate: Failed to stop service wuauserv, error = 0x80070005
* WARNING: Exit code = 0x80070005
*********
** END ** Setup: Installing client binaries
*************
FATAL: InstallUpdatedBinaries failed with error 0x80070005
FATAL: InstallUpdatedBinaries failed with error:0x80070005
FATAL: UpdateClientWorker failed: error 0x80070005

5- I checked Automatic Updates and it was set automatic and it was started.
I can manually stop and restart this service, but for some reason WU can not
stop it.

5- We have other Windows 2003 SP1 servers and WU v6 updates went fine on
those, The only difference we have on this server where WU v6 fails is we
have this hardened per Microsoft windows 2003 hardening instructions:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec...HG/SGCH00.mspx.
This server is hardened per "Enterprise Client" hardening INF file.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
-Ali

This error message may occur if you have insufficient permissions to the Windows
Update registry keys. The WindowsUpdate.log file will also read errors 0x80070005 and
0x80080005.

Thank you very much for your message. I've just checked the permissions on
that registry key and both System and Administrators has Full permissions. I
am suspecting this has something to do with the Automatic Updates service
permissions. Do you know how to check permissions on that service?
