W2KPRO Sp4 - Checking for updates window never completes automatic

All,

My problem is that the "searching for updates" rotating screen starts, but
does not complete automatically. Through a series of page transitions I can't
characterize and can't repeat, I can sometimes get to the list of updates and
then update reliably from there.

Any help?
