Want to roll-back to previous Windows Messenger?

I just downloaded the latest version of Windows Live Messenger (9). And it
changed some things in my Windows Live Mail. I really do not need all the
"bells and whistles", and would like to "roll-back" to the previous version.
And I have multiple identities in Windows Live mail and don't want to lose
any of the identities or their e-mails. Can I do this and if so..how? Thanks

P.S. I have Windows XP Pro

We are wanting to piggy back on "jumo"'s issue. we are a small IM community
of four deaf people using ASL. We all have Vista Home Premium. Two happy WLM
8.1 users. One less happy WLM 2008 user and one unhappy 2009 user... As
"Jumo" we don't need or want the "bells and whistles". We all want to go
back to 8.1. What are the steps and sequence for this regression?. Thank you
for any suggestions

Greetings,

When you install the latest Messenger, Windows Live Mail gets updated too.

However, it was my understanding that all versions of Windows Live Mail do not have
identities support, so I'm wondering if you were using Outlook Express?

As a quick fix though, you may just want to use the System Restore feature in Windows to go
back to before when you installed the latest Windows Live Messenger and everything should be
back to the way it was before. To get to System Restore click Start, then Help & Support,
and then 'Undo changes to my computer using System Restore'.

Be aware though that uninstalling and reinstalling the old applications is certainly still an
option, although we'll need to know which versions and which applications you need.

Hi Lu,

Yes you can downgrade to 8.1.

Firstly you'll need to uninstall the version you have installed already though. You can do
this by going to Programs and Features in the Control Panel. For Live Messenger 2008 it will
be listed as Windows Live Messenger and for 2009, you'll have to choose the Windows Live
Essentials option and then uninstall Messenger from within that installer that will appear.

After that you can simply install 8.1 from here:

Hi Jonathan,
Thank you for answering our post. We use Hotmail and Windows Mail. We noted
that the upgrade to 2009 included WL Essentials (92.9MB) plus a WL Sync
(2.78 MB) and WL Upload Tool (225 KB). Should these programs also be
uninstalled? We like the System Restore option. However, Help and Support
does not explain how far back we can restore. Is there a time limit? Can a
system be restored back 30 days or more?
Thank you.

Hi,

Windows Mail will still be there, you should still be able to find it in the Start menu.
Just remove the shortcut to Windows Live Mail. If for some reason you can't find it, just
head over to \Program Files\Windows Mail and run the winmail program yourself. Naturally you
can also create a new shortcut for it too.

The amount of restore points will depend on how much disk space you have available, so it can
go back only a few days or months depending on what's available and how many changes have
been made to the system. Additionally, these restore points are only made every 24 hours (if
your machine is on and idle) or when you install/uninstall software.

So how exactly do you downgrade

Every time I try, and then sign in, it tells me that a new version i
available and that I "must upgrade" to continue, and I thus cannot sig
in

The new live messenger is complete crap with webcams, and I went fro
no issues at all to it never working. I depend on webcam for wor
conversations with coworkers, and I've been dead in the water trying t
figure this out. If I view the network traffic with wireshark, an
hammer the "Video" button, nothing happens on wireshark from MSN. I
doesn't even try to make the call. Its ridiculous

Thanks

I get either this

Messenger is not available right now. Please try again later
(0x8100039d

Or This

Messenger is not available right now. Please try again later
(0x8ac70013

And I think two different error codes. They seem to be totally a
random. Whatever QA at microsoft actually let this ship should b
fired

(And no, I don't have McAfee, and no I don't have any firewall block
for MSN

Jonathan,
Thank you, we resolved our Mail issues and appreciated and understood your
explanation on restore points. We read "Help and support" their explanations
were vague not as clear as yours. Thank you.
