....sort of like, "My compliments to the chef."
Have had my Vista computer about 12 days now and have been able to install
ALL my favorite apps, including some which date back to Windows 3.1!!
The beta testers did a wonderful job of creating backwards
compatibility..hey I was one of the beta testers to which you sent a disk so
I guess I am partially complimenting myself and all those who participated in
that beta testing program. But, mostly, it's a compliment to those who kept
track of all the beta testers' feedback and acted on it! What a job that
must have been, but what a great idea that turned out to be for Microsoft
even though it must have cost a penny or two. :-)
Thanks for all that hard work.

I am pleased that Microsoft chose to make the beta program open to all
comers, as it allowed me to also participate. The results of the open
beta test are clearly evident when the remarkable stability,
compatibility and user-friendliness are taken into account. Though
Security is way better than anything Microsoft has provided before, I
think that UAC could perhaps be a little tougher.

You made a extremely valid point about compatibility. I can't use any
of the really old Win 3.1 software, for two reasons: 1) I'm using Vista
x64 and all 16-Bit support has been removed entirely from Vista x64, and
2) I've since replaced anything useful from my days of using Win 3.1
with updated versions that worked on Windows 95, 2000, XP and now also
Vista.

Games performance and compatibility is staggering. I don't play games
often, but those few titles I do own work better now than they ever did,
and I don't even ned to use Windows XP Compatibility Mode to run them.

It's unfortunate that not many people realize how much effort went into
making Vista the stable and compatible OS that it is today. Microsoft
has clearly taken a heads-up from their users and have built a fantastic
foundation for the future. Almost makes we wish I had a Delorean that I
could get up to 88 so that I could get a sneak peek at Windows Seven!

I like the search capabilities and the eye candy.
I see potential, but so far very unstable and of course compatibility is hardware more than anything else.
I did get the 32 bit version on the desktop and 64 on the laptop.
The learning curve is steep. But so was going from 98/ME to XP.

Actually, I HATE the search feature because of the constant indexing; I
turned it off. I use a tiny freeware utility called cathy.zip where you can
catalog ALL your drives and CD's with data on them and search them in SECONDS
when you are not even connected to the USB drives or have the CD in your
computer! You can search for ANYTHING across all your media or just search
a spot you think the file is in. You also can choose to scan drives or
cd's anytime or rescan them and it does that job in seconds too. I
discovered it after I found CDtree too bulky.

Actually, Cathy is postcard-ware because the author of it is in Europe and
just asks that you send a postcard to his young daughter if you want to, as
way of thanks for his writing the app. :-) Cool.
