I want to visit Windows Update WITHOUT automatic updates on.

I am tired of this.

Prior to XP Service Pack 2, I could look for SPs and Critical updates in my
own time.
I had automatic updates off. Manual process over which _I_ retain control.
Reason is simple. I don't wish for my PC to check _every time_ I connect for
updates.
That steals bandwidth.

Now, after XP SP2,
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?ln=en-us
does not seem permit manual updates.

What the hell is going on?

Any comments?

This is easily fixed.

Go to:

Control Panel
System
Automatic Updates
select the radio button that will 'Notify me but dont download or install
them.' (automatic Updates)

Then you can go to WU (from IE) when it suits you and decide for yourself if
and when you'll install any notified updates...

This is one of the first thing I did after installing SP2, and I had read
about how to do this several times both on Microsoft SP2 support pages and
in numerous third party reviews of SP2 and WU v5 changes to the way
Microsoft would deliver updates to XP.

Windows Updates (autorun or manual) requires that the WIn XP
service "Automatic Updates" be enabled. You can enable this
service by entering services.msc in the Start | Run command box.
Look at the Automatic Updates service. It needs to be set to
Automatic. Once this is done, you will be able to run windows
update manually. If you don't want the service running in the
background, you would have to start it and stop it manually.

Thanks for the workaround.

or you can keep Autoupdates off and add this link to your favorites folder.
It is the older version of windows update and it is still up and works with
sp2. I quess ms thought it smart to keep it around for awhile ;-)

These error messages indicate your Windows Update *services* are NOT
running; They're disabled as the error message indicates.

Try this;
Go to:

Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Services

And check that Automatic Updates is enabled, started, and on automatic.
If it isn't double click on it and start it, and set it to automatic so that
it starts automatically each time you start your computer.

For the BITS service you can safely set it to manual, and allow XP to start
it only when it's needed. It doesn't need to be running all the time.

For your Events Log service start that and set it to automatic also. This
service and the events log is very handy for keeping an eye on how your
computer is running...

Then try going to the the WU website again...

To have easy access to your events logs, try enabling it on your start menu:

Start Button
right click
Properties
Start Menu
Customise
Advanced
scroll to System Administration Tools
select Display on All Programs Menu and Start Menu.

click OK

To access the events logs, on the Start Menu select Administratve Tools,
Event Viewer

There you will have an Applications log, a Security Log, and a System Log.

All three logs show various system events and error messages, and provide
links to Help and Support (when you double click on an event) to fix any
errors....
You will need to be online to use this help and support function as it links
to Microsoft help and support wesites.

Thanks, but that does not quite do it for me. When I click on View
Downloaded History, it says "You have not downloaded any updates."

That's strange, my download history is still there.

Any particular reason you didn't include this error in your first post? See

Ok, I understand, I think. I will try it out.

So to get "Manual" updates I have to set "Automatic Updates" on.

Read that sentence I just wrote. Make sense to you? Not to me?
Sorry, nothing personal, but this situation that MS have created, sucks.

Prior to XP SP2, I did not have to have Automatic Updates services running
at all.
A manual check of Windows Update would enlighten me as to whether there were
any patches to apply. I liked that.
