I think we've all done the client project, for fun or to learn.
There is no [recent] documentation. The closest you're going to get is the old documentation
for the Windows [not live] Messenger API.
However, there is some third party protocol documentation:

And since you're using .NET, you can use the dotMSN library (although I realize this isn't
