Repost from another group. Sorry.

I've been battling this for weeks.

I've got XP Pro
When I go the the WindowsUpdate site it tells me I can't update unless I am
a member of the administrators group.

At the time I one user who was and always had been in the administrator's
group and had performed countless updates. (My problems started just before
SP 2 was released).

Since then, in an attempt to fix it, I've created a new user with admin
privileges. Same results.

I've logged in as the administrator - same results.

I've renames the catroot2 folder under system32 - No help.

I tried to remove the "nowindowsupdate" from the registry as suggested on
the MS site, but the entry did not exist.

I tried changing the permissions in the registry to allow everyone
privileges to WindowsUpdate, but that was already the case. I also passed
those permissions on to all child entries.

I am not part of a domain. Never have been. There are no network policies in
place. I've tried it with Windows Firewall off and on. Other PC's behind my
router are able to access the updates.

I've logged into Safe Mode with network access as both THE ADMINISTRATOR and
an admin user, with the same results.

I've searched high and low for a fix and am at wit's end, but I'm having a
couple of other issues and I really need to get the updates.

Someone surely has been here before. Please give me an idea I've not tried.

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from
your system.

Noel,

Thanks, but still not getting it.
I'm pretty aggressive about spyware/adware anyway. I've been running
Ad-Aware Pro long before this problem and keep it current with regular
ascans. I also run Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster. At your suggestion I've
run Stinger and it came up empty and CW Shredder did not detect anything as
well.

I'm getting pretty aggravated with the whole thing. I'm feeling like the
cartoon cat that destroyed the whole house trying to get the stupid mouse
AND NEVER DID.

Any more ideas. I really am grateful, I'm just aggravated and really need to
get updates working.

What about your ActiveX settings?
Make sure that ActiveX is switched ON and allowed

It is and has been.

I've also tried to install the "newest" version of IE, but it won't because
a new version already exists.

I'm really, really running out of ideas.

That makes two of us!

Did you get an error number with your message?

I assume you've trawled through the Windows Updates Troubleshooter?

Error: [Error number: 0x8DDD0002]
To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an
administrator or a member of the Administrators group. If your computer is
connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from
completing this procedure.

I've looked through everything I can find. Most of the things in the
troubleshooter you mention don't apply. I don't use a proxy so I can't
access the proxy settings. I don't use a domain, so there are no policies.

Nevertheless, I've gone through all of them.

It seems so silly, but I can't get past this. I did the SP2 upgrade
manually, but there are a ton of others out there I need to get, including
one specifically to fix a problem on my printer server.

Not to mention, it's just plain old making me nuts.

Whoopee, Hallelujah, hugs & kisses (from my wife) and about any other sign
of appreciation I can give.

That one did it. What did you search on. I've done a gazillion Google
searches and not found it.

With one error - I had to go to safe mode to make the changes, even in XP
Pro, but I figured that out.

Thank you , thank you, thank you!
