I read all the posts regarding update issues. I myself have been trying in
vain to get a manual update (short of downloading any code that MS will
change and hide in the registry or OS).They all have different errors and all
these novice PC experts seems to think that they have the answers. But it
appears that every method these individuals have tried has FAILED. That leads
to one CONCLUSION! Microsoft is no longer allowing users to pick which
updates they want, but are forcing users to accept all updates automatically
REGARDLESS OF CONTENT!!! That means Microsoft (AKA WINDOWS) servers or OS can
basically watch and spy on all your programs and activity! And you the
unsuspecting user have no recourse. My suggestion is to not download any MS
updates until they stop this intrusion or we as consumers must switch to
MACS. If MAC does the same I would suggest we start seriously thinking about
law suits or just not using Windows or PC's anymore. Sooner or later we may
have to go back to the old ways of mail and talking to people to get our
business done. As one person we can't gain any satisfaction but as a mass
group we are a force to be reckoned with!

But which is worse? Having Microsoft spy (maybe legitimately
under the guise of US Homeland Security) or having thousands
of viruses, spybots and adbots running abound unchecked? And
even though the proper answer is to euthanize Windows for the
abdomination that it is, is there anything better that is not
so vulnerable or has the potential to be vulnerable? No, not
even the Mac, especially when the Mac user population base gets
large enough. OTOH, let's nuke the whole planet and revert to
living in the stone age.

I realised that problem only came after I had installed the new Microsoft
Update files so I uninstalled it. I still can't do manual updates but was
able to access history and found the automatic updates had been happening and
had been cancelled when I switched off! 2 of them were the check to see if
you are running a legal copy of XP! I had e-mailed the microsoft support but
after an initial reply have not heard back. I think you are right until they
have checked everyone for a legal copy of XP we cannot decide what we
download and when. A little too much power I think!

Like I said before. We either goto another operating system, start a class
action lawsuit or stop using PC's. I might remind you that society did just
fine without all this intrusive high tech crap a few years back. I remember
the days when you could actually talk to a real person to get things done
(without going thru 19 different voice prompt recordings or being transfered
to 6 tiers of customer service support). Another way of protecting yourself
from all the Spyware/Malware/Virus's is to take some time and learn about the
OS and it's vulnerabilities. There is information out on the net (as of yet)
that help us protect ourselves from these nasties. I know that open
network/system ports are one major danger that most Hijackers use. Also it's
important not to use Outlook Express (that's the number 1 way of getting a
VIRUS). I have never paid or used virus software. And have always had a clean
system. I use third party free email (Yahoo, Google) because these giant
servers check and recheck their systems and can not afford to be infected.
I'm sure they are spying on my emails and webhits but... Hey it's like
locking your house/apt. If someone really wanted to get in they can just bust
down the door, break a window or hold a gun to your head and make you unlock
your door but would YOU leave your doors and windows open just so anyone can
walk in and help themselves to what you have!

Well Sir Bone Head

Have you tried the manual update yet? I've tried everything except allowing
Windows to do it automatically. And I get the same response (this is the
error page from MS update. Note the part that insists on the auto update
feature being turned on in place of manual option.) Below is the exact info
from MS update page.

"The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is
not running:

Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install
high-priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more
quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with
troubleshooting, if needed)
To make sure these services are running:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click
Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.
6. In the list of services, double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) and then click Properties.
7. In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply.
8. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.
9. In the list of services, double-click on Event Log and then click
Properties.
10. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
11. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button. "

My reply was in regards to your rant about MS spying on everyone and we
should all start using MAC's, then if they spy on us we should sue
everyone and stop using PC's. I find this to be over the top.

Additionally, you insult the people who try to provide support by
stating that "all these novice PC experts seems to think that
they have the answers. But it appears that every method these
individuals have tried has FAILED." That's totally incorrect. You do
not understand what the "Automatic Updates" service does and how it
works. The purpose of "Automatic Updates" allows the updates to be
downloaded to your computer and installed (installing is optional on
your part). So, without the "Automatic Updates" service running you
will not be able to download the updates...that simple.

Not only have I tried, but I actually do download the updates to my PC,
review them and install the ones I want or feel I need.

"the right of Plaintiff and the other members of the class to the exclusive
control and possession of their computer systems" is repeatedly claimed
to have been violated in Johnson versus Microsoft, a suit seeking class
action status in Seattle. You may be automatically joined unless you decline.

Scott Kamber of Kamber & Associates may not have as good a case
as he did against Sony, but he's going for it. Here's the COURT DOCUMENTS:
