IE8 completely wankers Windows mail, you click on an attachment and it puts
the file on the desktop, you get an error message (because it can't find it
where it's supposed to be). ****ing crap.

Vista SP2 assumes you're a peasant and are not using solid state drives, it
sets all drives to be defragged automatically on a schedule. Luckily I
discovered this quite quickly but it could cause warranty issues for some
who don't realise.

I've ripped out IE8 as I can't see a way around the issue, I'd not even
altered the TIF location so M$ have no excuse this time. Luckily, simply
uninstalling IE8 reverses the ****-up.
I'll most likely reinstall SP2 after I've had a dump.

Of course, this is all on Vista 64bit Ultimate, you might find things work
better in 32bit. If you find it works OK for you then post back and we can
compare notes.

I have first-hand knowledge of 5 different IE8 installations

on three machines it worked fine...and on two, the systems experienced
major problems

In both cases where there were problems...
uninstalling IE8 cured the problem and no system damaged resulted.

One person I know tried a system restore, but that did not do the
trick...the best thing to do is simply uninstall IE8 at once

The same cock-up does not appear on my laptop which is running 32bit

Update,
It did happen once the SP was installed.
I've now found a way of correcting the issue, if anyone wants it.

Why not post whatever solution you have come up with? Someone months or years from now another
curious soul may stumble across this message and you might not be around (or even remember this
thread) when they get around to asking for your solution.

Plus it might give others a chance to discuss your ideas.
