How do you set an association for the search program? When I try to do a
search I get this message "This file does not have a program associated with
it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations
control panel."
I'm running Vista 32 bit SP1 - Thanks

From http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941946

Associate the search protocol with a program:
1.Click Start, and then click Default Programs.
2.Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
3.Select the search protocol, and then click Change program.
4.Select the program that you want as the default program for handling the search protocol, and then click OK.

Set the default program for the search protocol

1.Click Start, and then click Default Programs.
2.Click Set your default programs.
3.Select the applications that you want to use as the default program, and then click Choose defaults for this program.
4.Select the search protocol, and then click Save.

Hi Thanks for your help, but this hasn’t solved the problem. In your first
section there isn’t a search protocol. When I’ve gone into the second section
(Default Programs) There is listed Windows search Explorer I’ve set as
default program then I select choose defaults for this program. Another page
opens with a check box ticked, a computer icon SEARCH Windows Search protocol
Windows Explorer I've pressed save and Ok. I've gone back to Associate a file
type and there isn't a search protolcol listed. If I try to run the search I
get the same message about associations. Any ideas? Thanks

If I understand correctly from your post, you can search for and find a
file, but you cannot open it?

Or is it that the search function itself is not working?

Hi Doctor Keo,

Can you list out the steps you use to launch Search? Does F3 work from the Desktop?

Thanks again for your continued interest in my problem. I start my search by
entering the information I’m searching for in the search box above the start
button. The search everywhere is highlighted; if I press enter or click on
search on search everywhere I receive the association error message. If click
on search the Internet it opens a web page and then fails.
Starting the search with F3 seems to work fine.
Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. No I can open the file, if finds its. See my reply to
Ramesh of how the error occurs. I'm sure that prior to this error If I
pressed enter on the search box it would open a new window with al the
results and the options for advanced search options.

This happens due to incorrect registry permissions, which seems the original cause for the error message when clicking Search.

Click Start, type regedit.exe and press ENTER
Navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Search

From the File menu, choose Export and save the branch to a REG file.

Send me the contents of the file via the feedback form here:
